MY LAST POST

Dear Parents,
Writing this "last post" for my classroom blog is causing me to feel quite emotional.  I'm finding it difficult to realize that tomorrow really will be my last day as a public school teacher.  I have loved every class under my charge, but this group of children will hold a special place in my heart as they will always be my last.  Thank you for your trust and support and the privilege of being a small part of your children's lives.  They will go on to grow and embrace all that life has to offer and I hope I can do the same.  I want to thank you also for the most surprising and wonderful gifts Mrs. Duperron and I received on Tuesday.  I am overwhelmed and humbled by your kindness and generosity.  After 37 years of teaching I have seen so much change and yet stay the same.  What has not changed are families, doing their best to raise their children with love.  We all want our children to be responsible, caring citizens and students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to face the challenges of their generation.  I know these children are well on their way and the younger teachers are as passionate and skilled as ever.  Thank you again.
Mrs. Cathy Towne
P.S. I have enclosed an iMovie (DVD) in your child's report card.  I think you will enjoy it.  I have played several of them to ensure they work, but sometimes DVD players can be quirky.  If you find it doesn't work, please let me know and I will give you another.  As well, some people don't realize you have to press the "enter" button on the remote after you press "play" to get the movie started after the introduction. Regardless, I want everyone to have one that works. Call me if you have any problems with your DVD.  780 987-2671  Mrs. T

Paper Mache'

Thank you so much Mr. Abtosaway, Mrs. Hugh, Mrs. Mackay, Mrs. Toogood and Mrs. Marrelli for your help with paper mache'. You know we couldn't do it without you! It was a great afternoon and all students showed persistence in finishing a sizeable pig.

Even little sisters got busy and helped!

Trip to the Museum and Hawreluk Park

All the comments I received were positive; a good day for all.  I have a correction about the parent helpers.  Mrs. Kuchirka joined 1T on the trip, not Mrs. Mackay as previously reported.

Spelling

This Friday is our last Weekly Spelling Test.  We will use the remaining time to review.  The Green Spelling Books are looking a little ragged, but they have served us well.  Thank you, parents for helping your child practice and getting those books to school most Fridays.  I will send them home for good next week.

Social Studies - Learning About the Past

Madison brought examples of technology from the past to present.  I wonder if any parents remember LP's?  Likely not many, but grandparents will!

Assembly

I think 1T and 2D did a great job of performing two songs at Assembly this morning!  I was impressed with my students as they learned one of the songs in three days.  You have likely heard your child singing "When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along" at home.  This afternoon during Art Class many were singing away as they worked; a very catchy tune! A big Thank you to Mrs. Down for choosing the songs, working with my students and playing the piano for our performance!

Science - Plants

We are having some fun learning about the needs of plants and how they grow.  Ask your child about our experiment with carnations.  What did we do?  What did we observe?  What is the science?

We finally have some parsley sprouts.  Why have some sprouted an others not?

Happiness

The Grade Three students planned an hour they called The Happiness Project during which students could choose from a range of activities to engage in.  It was a beautiful afternoon and enjoyed by students and teachers.

1T School Community Project

1T planted geraniums this morning in our planter in front of the school. You may remember we pulled the old flowers out in the Fall. This is a service 1T students do as a contribution to beautifying our School and fits well with our Social Studies Topic; Taking Part in a Community.

Awe! That water is cold!

Monday, May 12th, Bring a stuffy to school

Please have your child bring his/her favourite stuffed toy to school on Monday.

READ....READ....READ!!!

Reading should be an enjoyable experience.  Sharing a wide variety of books in a relaxed setting fosters the love of reading. I am so pleased that my students, your children, consider Browse Box time one of their favourite parts of the school day. They are well on their way to becoming life long lovers of books!

1T WINS!

Thank you parents, for your support in the First RBES Spellathon. We won an ice-cream party, which we will enjoy one afternoon next week.

Education Week

This was Education Week. This year, instead of having the Community come to the School, we took the School to the Community.  1T and 1F created a display of student writing with pictures and put the display in Discovery Place for the week.  I heard some positive feedback from a few of the seniors who said they enjoyed and "Got a kick out of" the children's work.

Science and Health

Currently in Science we are learning more about Seasonal Changes, Spring and Living Things.  This week we finally planted parsley seeds using the  2 litre bottles prepared with soil last week!  If all goes well students will observe how those teeny tiny seeds can grow to produce a tasty garnish for salads or soups.

In Health our new initiative is learning about the Food Groups. The goal is to raise awareness of and reinforce healthy eating as students identify and keep track of their lunches. A "Rainbow lunch" includes foods from the four groups. Today we enjoyed some fresh fruit provided by Extra Foods.
