Fort Edmonton

The boys get their fingernails inspected.

Here Maverick gets a taste of a disciplinary measure often given to students who misbehaved. Maverick was good enough to demonstrate. His after school punishment would have been cleaning the outhouse.
Students were asked what they would purchase in this hardware store if they could only choose three items and tell why those items would be useful.

The black and red group!

School in the past. The teacher was very strict and walked around with a switch. Children were to be seen and not heard and speak only when spoken to. You could have heard a pin drop in that classroom!

Students get ready to have their fingernails inspected.
The weather was wet, but that didn't damper the experience at Fort Edmonton. Thank you to the following parents who supervised and helped to make it a successful trip; Mrs. Thorsen, Mrs. Sparrow, Mr. McArthur and Mrs. Simms.

Odds and Ends

Spelling:
We will have two more Spelling Lists for the weeks of May 28 - June 1 and June 4 - 7. The last two weeks will be spent on review.
Home Reading:
I would like students to have all books returned the week of June 4 - 7. If your child is reading the Phonetic books and has not finished they may continue to take those home.
Sharing Journals:
I have been pleased with the excellent support from home with Sharing Journals. Students have shown growth in their writing and love their turn to share. Thank you parents, for making this writing project a success!
Puppet Show:
We are planning to put on a Puppet Show for family and friends, tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of Friday, June 22. I will confirm this in the near future.
Fun Day:
Our annual Fun Day is Planned for Monday, June 25 with a rain out date on Tuesday 26. If you are able to volunteer for the day or half the day please let me know.

Spelling Words

The Spelling words posted on the Blog are not the correct ones for this week. The "uck" spelling pattern your child brought home are the words that will be on the test tomorrow. I apologize for any confusion this caused.

Help Needed for Clay Workshops

We are doing a clay project this Friday, May 11th, from 1:00 to 2:15. I have two parents coming to help, but the Clay Guy requests four. It would be beneficial to have two more.  Also, Mrs. Luciw is looking for one more parent helper for her Clay Time on Thursday, May 17th at 8:45 am. Please let me know if you can help.

Word Wall and Spelling

At this point we have completed the list of Word Wall Words for First Grade. I will not be sending home new Word Wall Words but will continue to reinforce the core list at school on a daily basis. I will continue to send home Spelling Words for four more weeks. Some of these Spelling Words will be repeats from earlier in the year and some will be new. I base my choice of words on the high frequency miss-spelled words in student's Journal Writing. I will also include one or two words with the same spelling pattern which facilitates learning.

Ira Sleeps Over

We read the story Ira Sleeps Over by Bernard Waber. It is the story of a little boy named Ira who sleeps over at his friend Reggie's house. Ira is concerned about sleeping without his teddy but is too shy to admit this to Reggie. All ends well when the boys discover they each are fond of their teddies. Please have your child read the description of the teddy they made at school today. Your child was also given instructions to read a bedtime story to their new bear.

The Eggs Have Arrived

We have started the incubation process of seven duck eggs and of course the students are very excited! Tomorrow we will look at the calendar and estimate when our ducklings should hatch out. The information I have is that incubation time is approximately 35 days. I know this will seem like a long wait for the children, but hopefully it will end up being a wonderful learning experience.
