Students had a great introduction to working in groups at Literacy Centres with the support of Moms and Nanas too! At these Centres students are use their knowledge of letters and sounds. The activities reinforce what we are learning and provide a variety of ways for children to be engaged in purposeful work.

Nothing says Autumn like a slice of warm apple pie with a little icecream!

On Friday morning we will be baking two apple pies to enjoy in the afternoon. If you have apples on a tree that you can spare, please let me know and send in on Thursday. Then I'll know how many I need to bring in. Thanks in advance!

Fall Walk Tomorrow

 

We have six parents joining us for the Fall Walk tomorrow. Awesome! Just so you know, our route takes us on a trail with a few hills, so can be a bit of a challenge with strollers, but it is doable. We will leave the school at 1:00, walk to Ball Diamond #1 on River Drive (North Devon), head down on a trail and arrive back at Ball Diamond #1 at the play park. I have a parent who is driving and will meet us there with cold water and apples for a snack. If you are concerned about strollers/little ones, there is the option to meet us at the play park at about 1:30 - 1:45.

Bus Safety

On Thursday we had a Bus Safety Program. The presentation in the classroom was fun and informative. The instructor kept students highly engaged with the use of a puppet and props. Students had the experience of safely exiting a real school bus out the back door and to a safe zone.

Hi Parents!

My goal is to make this blog useful and worth the time you spend reading it. I relish feedback, for example: was it helpful, too general, too wordy? Are there things you would like me to include on the blog? Please let me know, as this blog is for you and your child.

Math
In September we will focus on four things:

1. Explore sorting and patterning. Patterns are an integral part of mathematics. A pattern can be physical, visual or auditory. Children learn to describe, reproduce, extend and create patterns having two to four elements and translate them from one representation to another. For example, the physical pattern, “snap, snap, slap, clap, clap” could also be represented with letters, “A, A, B, C, C” or colours, “red, red, yellow, blue, blue”.


2. Reciting the days of the week and months of the year in order.


3. Counting by 1's to 100.

4. Representation of numbers to 10. The focus is on number relationships, including concepts such as Conservation of Number, “more than” and “fewer than”, estimation and solving simple problems involving number.


Something to think about:


When children estimate, they are using prior knowledge to make a reasonable guess. Teaching children how to use a referent or anchor, such as 5 or 10, helps them develop number relationships through comparison. For example, “if this much is 5, then I think the whole thing must be 12.”

In September we will work on reading readiness; letters and sounds, rhyming, patterns, printing etc. Home Reading will begin in October.


In writing we will focus on drawing and using our knowledge of sounds to print ideas.


We will begin a weekly Word Wall Word and Spelling Word Booklet that will come home beginning the week of September 24th.

Science
Topics for September and October are Creating Colour and Seasonal Changes in Autumn.

Social Studies
We have begun our first topic, Belonging in My World, with getting to know each other through an interview and story writing activity.
