Key Words

Your child brought home a "Key Ring" of words today.  These are the same Word Wall Words that come home each Monday with the Spelling Words.  We are working with them daily so your child should know them quite well by now.  Please find a safe place to keep them that is handy, especially if your child needs practice to read them fluently by sight.  They should be practiced daily until your child reads them with ease.  If your child is struggling, try having them read the few they know first to build confidence and add only two or three new at a time until they are successful.  Another strategy is to take them off the ring and spread them out.  Then ask your child to first read the ones he/she knows then you say one of the words and have them find it.
Please keep the key ring with words at home.
New sets of words will be sent home to add to the ring as our reading vocabulary increases.

Fabulous Fall Walk!

We had a wonderful day!  So fortunate to have perfect weather!  Thank you parents who helped by washing and cutting up our apple snack and walking with us!  A special thank you to Christine Legault for transporting our water bottles and apples so that we could be carefree on our little journey.

Fall Walk Friday

A note went home today about a Fall Walk this coming Friday.  I am looking for some extra help.  I require two parents to come to school at about 12:00 to wash and cut up apples for our walk. We leave at 1:00 so I am allowing an hour to do this.  I will have everything you need for this job.  As well, I need one parent who is willing to drive to our destination with student's water bottles and apples.  Please let me know if you can help.  Thanks in advance!

Social Studies

Sharing Time for Social Studies is going well. We are learning about each others families. It is fun to learn that some families share interests such as camping and fishing.  We sure were happy to learn that Keanna and her Mom enjoy baking together. Thanks for the banana muffins!  They were a nice treat!

Spelling Book

You will have seen your child's weekly Spelling Book come home yesterday. The test this week will be on Thursday, as Friday is a Division PD Day. The words your child will be tested on are the five on top of the page. Please practice. As well, your child is to write a complete sentence, with your help as needed, on the page where indicated.

Social Studies

Our current Social Studies topic is “Belonging in My World”.
Students will develop an understanding of and
appreciation for how identity and self-esteem are
enhanced by a sense of belonging and how active members in a community contribute to the well-being, growth and vitality of their groups and communities.
Following please find two activities requiring your help from home.
1.    Family first shapes our identity. Please send in something from home that tells about your family. It could be a special recipe, a picture, an artifact from your cultural background or something that shows a special interest your family shares. We will have a daily “Sharing Time” during the week of September 16 – 19th.

2.    Belonging to a group outside the family also helps to shape our identity. If your child has an item that would represent a group they belong to, it could be brought in for their “Sharing Day” during the week of September 23 – 27th.
Some suggestions
          - dance-group apparel/photos
          - sports or club uniform/photos
          - group logos, symbols, badges
- activities they enjoy like collecting things, drawing, bike riding, swimming, reading, family activities.

Our First Friday

Our school year is off to a great start! I am so happy that all 18 students were at school every day the first week. There is much to learn and regular attendance helps. So thanks, parents. I am also thankful that Mr. Kierstead was able to create a fourth grade one class. We always manage, but smaller classes, especially in the primary grades allows more opportunity for each child to learn.
Hoja performed on our first afternoon. The gym was a little warm for comfort but students seemed to enjoy the show and sang along to some current pop hits that I didn't recognize. I'll have to update my playlist to stay current!
The highlight of the week for many was attending the Bike Tour Parade. It really was quite an experience to see, hear and feel the woosh of the group of riders as they cycled by. There was great school spirit and your children, class 1T, showed excellent behaviour as group on our first outing.
Look forward to some information about our first topic of study in Social Studies early next week.

Peanut Allergy

A student in our classroom has a severe food allergy to peanuts/nuts. It is important that there is strict avoidance to this food in order to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction. We are asking your help to provide the student with a safe school environment.

Any exposure to peanuts/nuts may cause a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires emergency medical treatment. To reduce the chance of this occurring, we are asking that you do not send any peanut or nut containing products to school with your child.  If your child has eaten peanuts/nuts before coming to school, please be sure your child’s hands and face have been thoroughly washed before entering the school.

I appreciate your support of these procedures.  Please contact me if you have any questions.
